Autumn 2018 80th Season

80th Birthday season

From our Director/CEO Louise Chantal:

We've really pulled out all the stops for our 80th Anniversary season, marking a firm commitment by Oxford Playhouse to become a producing theatre once again, bringing the best and most exciting shows to your local theatre, and extending the work we do offstage, both working with thousands of young people on creative projects and supporting artists to develop their work and expand their audiences.   Here's our indefatigable Programme Director Laura Elliot on the season coming-up…

From our Programme Director, Laura Elliot:

Why am I excited about our 80th season? Because its big, its bold, and it celebrates OP with four stunning new co-productions; marking our commitment to investing in the best of UK theatre companies and creatives.

The first one to hit our stage celebrates a relationship with a company that have been central to Playhouse programme for the last 25 years – English Touring Theatre. From revivals of classics, to literary adaptions and the sharpest of new writing, ETT have been behind some of our most popular shows (Arcadia, The Herbal Bed and Streetcar Named Desire). We’re working with them alongside Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory to bring their critically-lauded production of Shakespeare’s Othello to Oxford in September.

Next up, Oxford University alumni Blanche McIntyre adapts Aristophanesassemblywomen with her very own assembly of female writers to bring us the world premiere production of Women In Power, a co-production with Nuffield Southampton Theatres. With writers including Wendy Cope, Jenny Éclair and Shappi Khosandi, I’m excited to see this raucous new musical comedy exploring a world where women take the lead. This will be presented alongside our free Inspiring Women Symposium marking the culmination of our VOTE 100 festival this year.

Speaking of inspirational women, our third co-production is with Emma Rice’s new company Wise Children and The Old Vic. Emma Rice is one of the UK’s most iconic directors – her previous productions here at OP were Rebecca, Brief Encounter most recently Flying Lovers of Vitebsk.  She will be creating the world premiere theatre production of Angela Carter’s novel Wise Children, which follows the story of twin chorus girls Nora and Dora Chance and their brilliantly bizarre theatrical family. I can’t wait to see this brought to life in a celebration of show business, family and hope, in Emma’s unique theatrical style.

Finally in April 2019 Oxford Playhouse is delighted to be teaming up with Out Of Joint and Royal & Derngate to present the world premiere stage production of Kazuo Ishiguro’s literary masterpiece The Remains of The Day, adapted by OP associate and one of Britain’s most exciting young writers, Barney Norris.Alongside our co-productions, we have a bumper season for you, including Alan Bennett’s The Habit Of Art starring Matthew Kelly. You can also enjoy west-end hit shows Shakespeare In Love, The Comedy about a Bank Robbery and The Wipers Times. From further afield, 2btheatre join us all the way from Canada with their critically acclaimed, award winning show Old Stock, A Refugee Love Story, a Klezmer-folk music-theatre hybrid starring Ben Caplan. Plus, there’s circus, comedy, dance, opera and gorgeous family shows, including The Tiger who Came to Tea in its 50th anniversary year; Alexandra Whitley’s electrifying dance-theatre spectacle 8 Minutes presented in collaboration with IF Oxford; Welsh National Opera’s bawdy Rhondda Rips It Up starring Lesley Garrett presented in collaboration with Somerville College; and a plethora of goodies in the Burton Taylor Studio.
