Full of Bennett’s delightful charm and plenty of pathos, An Englishman Abroad is the dramatized account of a real meeting between and actress and one of the infamous ‘Cambridge Spies’.
In the wake of Stalin’s death, the world finds itself grasping for peace in the new world order. In an effort to increase goodwill for the West, actress Coral Browne is sent to Russia in a touring production of Hamlet.
After a chance encounter at the theatre with this mysterious drunk, she receives a curious invitation to visit him in his Moscow flat…and bring a tape measure. What unfolds is a poignant, funny and (astonishingly) true story of friendship, loss and how hard it is to find a good suit in Soviet Russia.
