It’s April 1967. In a shabby boxing gym in Bethnal Green, elderly trainer Jimmy listens to the news: the world’s heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali, refuses to fight in Vietnam.

It’s a story Jimmy knows all too well. Back during WW1, he was known as the Quaker Boxer; he was a contender. But with Conscription, conscientious objectors went to prison or the firing squad. Jimmy made his choice, but he’s still haunted by those demons from the past. And that’s not even mentioning the demon from his present: Jo, the angry young woman determined to be a boxer. Is that even legal? In his 70s now, training her in the noble art is going to take all his strength (not to mention patience)...

Regulars at the BT, Take the Space were last in Oxford with the “beautifully acted” (Daily Info) Stella, a story of women, their men and astronomy. Audiences may also remember Hanging Hooke, a solo play about Robert Hooke.
